Use this checklist before sending the certificate. A certificate shows evidence of coverage; the policy and endorsements control the actual coverage.

General liability per occurrence limitCompare the per occurrence limit on the certificate with the per occurrence limit in the contract.
General liability aggregate limitCompare the aggregate limit on the certificate with the aggregate limit in the contract.
Products-completed operations aggregateCheck whether the certificate shows a products-completed operations aggregate when the contract requires it.
Additional insured wordingIf the contract requires additional insured status, confirm whether the hiring party asked for endorsement copies, completed operations wording, or both.
Primary and noncontributory wordingIf required, confirm whether the contract applies this wording to general liability, auto, umbrella, or another policy.
Waiver of subrogationIf required, confirm which policy must include the waiver and whether the certificate or endorsement shows it.
Certificate holder name and addressThe certificate holder should match the name and address supplied by the client or general contractor.
Policy effective datesThe policy dates should include the job period or the date range required by the contract.
Umbrella or excess limitIf the contract requires extra liability limits, check whether the umbrella or excess policy is shown and whether the limit is enough.

Follow-up notes

Items that need review before sending the certificate:

  • Ask whether the contract requires copies of additional insured endorsements.
  • Confirm whether completed operations additional insured wording is required after the electrical work is finished.
  • Confirm whether primary and noncontributory wording applies only to general liability or to other policies too.
  • Confirm whether waiver of subrogation applies to general liability, workers compensation, auto, or all listed policies.
  • Send the contract insurance section with the certificate request when wording is unclear.
