Use this checklist before binding coverage or issuing a certificate so the quote reflects waterfront work, contract terms, subcontractors, vessels, equipment, and employee injury questions.

Plain-English terms

Review these terms in the contract and ask the agent which policy forms or endorsements support them.

  • Additional insured: the contract asks your policy to protect another party for covered claims tied to your work. Confirm whether the requirement applies to ongoing operations, completed operations, or both.
  • Waiver of subrogation: the contract asks the insurer to give up recovery rights against a party after paying a covered loss. Confirm the waiver is allowed and endorsed where required.
  • Primary and noncontributory: the contract asks your policy to respond first and not seek contribution from another applicable primary policy.
  • Indemnity or hold harmless: the contract shifts responsibility for certain losses. Confirm the obligation does not exceed policy terms or limits.
  • Bumbershoot or excess: the contract asks for limits above primary coverage. Confirm the excess layer follows both marine and non-marine primary policies when needed.

Coverage lines to discuss

Check each coverage line that may need to appear in the quote or certificate process.

  • Marine general liability for bodily injury and property damage tied to marine construction operations.
  • Marine contractor's legal liability for third-party property in your care, custody, or control.
  • Hull and protection and indemnity if owned, leased, rented, chartered, borrowed, or subcontractor vessels, barges, workboats, or crew boats are used.
  • Bumbershoot or excess liability if the contract requires limits above the primary policies.
  • Contractor's equipment and tools for scheduled equipment, rented equipment, small tools, cranes, lifts, pile-driving equipment, or other jobsite gear.
  • Commercial auto or hired and non-owned auto for vehicles used in the work.
  • Workers compensation and possible Longshore/Longshore review for employees working on navigable waters or adjoining maritime areas.
  • Limited pollution or related review for dredging-adjacent, salvage, demolition, fuel, silt, underwater, or other pollution-sensitive work.

Coverage questions for the agent: ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________

Waterfront exposures

List the operations and locations that should be reflected in the quote.

Operations involved:

  • Dock or pier construction or repair
  • Seawall, bulkhead, breakwater, or riprap work
  • Marina, harbor, wharf, terminal, or port work
  • Boatlifts, davits, fender systems, or dock accessories
  • Shoreline stabilization, reef, mangrove, or restoration work
  • Dredging tied to covered marine work
  • Bridge maintenance or repair near water
  • Pile driving, salvage, demolition, diving, or underwater work

Work location notes: ____________________________________________________________

Vessels, barges, workboats, or floating platforms used: ____________________________________________________________

Equipment, tools, cranes, lifts, pile-driving gear, or rented equipment values to schedule: ____________________________________________________________

Subcontractor proof

Complete this section before subcontracted marine specialty work begins. Subcontractors are not typically covered automatically under your marine contractor policy, so proof and endorsements matter.

Subcontractors to verify: ____________________________________________________________

For each subcontractor, request and keep:

  • Signed subcontract or service agreement
  • General liability certificate
  • Marine liability certificate when the work is marine-related
  • Workers compensation certificate
  • Longshore/Longshore proof when the work or location may require it
  • Additional insured endorsement naming your business when required
  • Waiver of subrogation endorsement when required
  • Primary and noncontributory wording when required
  • Vessel, crane, barge, diving, welding, salvage, demolition, or specialty proof when relevant

Subcontractor follow-up notes: ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________

Longshore review

Use this section to flag jobs that need a workers compensation and Longshore/Longshore discussion before coverage is bound. Do not assume ordinary state workers compensation answers every maritime employee injury question.

Longshore review triggers:

  • Employees work on navigable waters
  • Employees work from vessels, barges, docks, piers, terminals, wharves, shipyards, or adjoining maritime areas
  • The project involves harbor construction, ship repair, shipbuilding, ship-breaking, cargo-handling areas, or work integral to maritime commerce
  • The job includes dock or pier construction, repair, or support work
  • Borrowed, rented, chartered, or subcontractor vessels are used with your employees on or near the water

Facts to send for review: Project location: ________________ Waterway or facility: ______________________________________ Employee tasks near water: _________________________________ Vessel or barge involvement: _______________________________ Questions for payroll or workers compensation carrier: ____________________________________________________________

Limits and certificates

Use this area to organize certificate and endorsement requests after the quote is matched to the contract.

Requested limits from contract: ________________ Certificate holder wording required by client: ________________ Certificate due date: ________________

Certificate checks:

  • Named insured matches the contracting entity
  • Project description matches the work being performed
  • Marine liability wording is included when required
  • Additional insured endorsement is attached or confirmed
  • Completed operations additional insured is addressed if required
  • Waiver of subrogation is attached or confirmed
  • Primary and noncontributory wording is attached or confirmed
  • Bumbershoot or excess limits are shown when required
  • Subcontractor certificates are current and stored with the project file

Items to send to the agent before binding: ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________

Next steps

  • Send the contract, requested limits, and certificate wording to the agent before binding.
  • Attach vessel, equipment, subcontractor, and loss-run details to improve quote accuracy.
  • Flag Longshore/Longshore questions early if employees work on navigable waters or adjoining maritime areas.
